Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a dissociative disorder. Most providers freak out around this label and look for an exit ramp to escape people whose safety makes them feel a certain way. If you are a provider looking to offload a client onto me, send them over. A BPD client on my caseload is something I actively want. I know peers reading that might be offended, but this is not about my peers. I do not experience a BPD client as different from other clients. The thing I notice first is not dysfunction in the theapuetic relationship, it is dysfunction in the client's relationships, it is the self reported distress of the confusion of having emotional reactions they cannot point to a cause for. Some can distinguish the reaction as not their own, but when the reaction is happening at the same time as your own genuine reaction it can be incredibly hard to distinguish where the emotion originates. What peers label a liability I experience literally nothing.
When a human being grows up in an environment defined by chronic invalidation, betrayal, or caregiver and environmental instability, the nervous system adapts. There is a subtle logic organizing relational feedback systems in clients with BPD. It is like an eldrich horror. You give an ant a human brain for 10 seconds and then it goes back. It would no longer understand anything. It could not make sense of the world. That is the adaptation. And the ant is trying to access the mind it no longer has and the ant is confused and terrified. It knows it experienced something, but it does not know what. That lingering feeling in the back of your mind itching never goes away. It is passive, but it has influence. The self is still there to be accessed, but now there is this influence. This urge. It in the corner of the room. Am I resonating yet?
When relational safety collapses and your body drops a wall between conflicting emotional realities, there is nothing wrong there. Holding them at the same time feels like total annihilation; so why would I expect that of you. Transient paranoia under stress are not random malfunctions; they are the aftershocks of an overloaded system trying to protect the human you deserve to be treated as. Healing does not mean forcing you into a whole that breaks you more.
Because BPD operates on this structural level, it belongs in direct conversation with Dissociative Disorders and PTSD, and complex developmental trauma. When standard care tries to extinguish these adaptations through behavioral policing or treats your intensity as a liability risk, it repeats the original relational injury directly fucking with a human trying to assert themselves in a relationship in the way that builds trust for them.
I do not work as a mechanic trying to fix you, because there is nothing broken inside you to repair. I integrate tools from Cognitive & Behavioral modalities, including deconstructed DBT Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and ACT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, alongside Internal Family Systems IFS, Schema Therapy, and experiential approaches.
