Living with a disability is, at its core, an ongoing state of overwhelm. It is the unceasing mental and physical strain of forcing a disabled body to function inside environments that contribute directly to dysfunction in a disabled body.
Care in this practice is not about teaching you how to tolerate harm or endure overwhelm silently. ADA exists and I intend to invoke her. I am a social worker. I go into environments to find where the chain unhooks. The only person who has to comply is the able bodied person. They have the obligation to be better and do better. If they want to invoke eugenics, I think the obligation still falls to the abled to treat us better and the law agrees on that one. Not to mention human development; if the narrative is we started as hunter gatherer tribes and became a full on 'society', then our obligation to care has not gone down: it has gone up. If we are a civilized and organized people then we have the duty to provide care to the least of us. That would be children, the disabled, the nursing, the protectors, and the elderly.
