Aging in a culture obsessed with youth, independence, and economic productivity often means confronting profound physical, relational, and existential shifts, making this stage a critical site for Elders. Between navigating retirement, adapting to changing physical capacities, and facing the loss of lifelong peers, older adults frequently experience complex emotional landscapes that dominant healthcare systems reduce to simple cognitive decline or typical aging. In my practice, I reject the dismissive pathologization of late-life distress, recognizing that being a human means we are all dependent on human relationships and systems of care across our lives. I offer a deeply respectful, grounded space for older adults to process major life transitions, honor their lived history, and navigate shifting roles within their families and communities without being treated as burdensome, invisible, or defective.
At the heart of this work is Existential Therapy, which provides a container to explore the big questions that naturally arise in later life, including mortality, personal legacy, autonomy, and the realities of End of Life care. Many older adults carry complex, unaddressed grief from decades of living, whether processing recent spousal loss, the death of friends, or cumulative life changes through Grief. To honor the singular, subjective reality of your lived experience without imposing diagnostic templates, I draw upon Phenomenological Therapy, alongside reflective modalities like Philosophical Therapy and Bibliotherapy to explore meaning, wisdom, and purpose. We also address the somatic realities of aging, including managing Chronic Illness, adapting to physical changes under Living with Disability, and coping with chronic Pain. Rather than treating bodily changes as personal failures or isolated malfunctions, we work to cultivate self-compassion, pacing, and dignity within healthcare environments that often feel impersonal.
This life stage also fundamentally alters family dynamics, requiring new approaches to care, support, and intergenerational connection. As older adults navigate shifting health needs, families often experience tension around independence, safety, and decision-making authority. Through Relationship & Family Services, I support both elders and their adult children as they navigate the complexities of Caregiving and Guardianship, helping families establish respectful Boundaries & Being in Relationship, resolve longstanding Relational Conflict, and balance safety concerns with the elder's fundamental right to self-determination. I also assist families through Mediation and Conflict Resolution during major transitions, such as housing changes or long-term care planning, ensuring the older adult's voice remains central and uncoerced.
To support practical clarity and peace of mind, I integrate collaborative skill-building through SFBT Solutions Focused Brief Therapy to identify current strengths and personal goals, alongside targeted approaches from Experiental / Exposure and Response models to manage late-life anxiety or intrusive worries. When medical, legal, or housing systems become overwhelming, I also provide collaborative assistance with your medical team and family through Case Management and System Navigation/Advocacy to help elders and their families secure necessary resources, navigate Accommodations & Inaccessible Systems, protect patient rights, and maintain holistic quality of life.
