Standard psychology looks for visible, obvious behaviors: hand washing, light switch flipping, or physical checking, eating. If a clinician cannot see you doing something behaviourally, they frequently miss OCD entirely, misdiagnosing you or telling you you are just anxious.
In reality, many of the most severe compulsions are completely invisible to the outside world. They happen internally, somatically, or covertly, consuming immense amounts of energy while you appear completely still on the outside.
Compulsions that do not look like compulsions are covert actions your mind and body take to neutralize terror, regain certainty, or satisfy a somatic urge:
Replaying conversations, events, or memories over and over from every angle to ensure you did not say the wrong thing, harm someone, or act out of line.
Constantly scanning your own body for physical sensations, checking your breathing, monitoring your heart rate, or checking to see if you feel "aroused," "guilty," "pain," or "safe."
Asking subtle, indirect questions in conversation to gauge if someone is upset with you or if you are still a good person, without directly admitting you are in terror.
Spending hours reading articles, forums, medical papers, or legal codes to prove or disprove a feared outcome or diagnostic concern.
Endless internal debating to prove your own innocence, integrity, or sanity against intrusive thoughts.
Forcing yourself to think a "good" word, prayer, or image to cancel out a "bad" or taboo thought that just occurred.
Carrying invisible compulsions means working a full-time job inside your head while trying to live a daily life. It leads to profound mental exhaustion, memory fog, and emotional burnout.
I understand this unseen labor. In our work together, we bring these hidden loops into the light without judgment or moral panic. We do not punish your brain for trying to keep you safe. Instead, we build real somatic grounding, restore trust in your own perception, and help your nervous system downshift so you can lay down the exhausting weight of constant internal policing.
