Schizoanalysis, developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, is a radical critique of psychoanalysis and institutional psychiatry that dismantles the mental health industrial complex. Schizoanalysis is a critical framework because it focuses on the lived experiences of those we historically and currently label as mad or insane. Traditional psychology operates as a tool of state and capitalist enforcement, attempting to shrink every human struggle, existential dread, or socio-political rage down to a privatized family drama inside the individual mind. It takes a person responding to the horrors of war, economic exploitation, ecological destruction, or systemic oppression, and tells them that their pain is merely a personal defect, a chemical imbalance, or an unresolved Oedipal complex. Freud who made the Oedipal complex first made the Seduction Theory. I will hand it to Freud, he was quite progressive interviewing women at the time. He interviewed the 'princesses of Versailles' and found they were systematically being raped by their fathers. This caused Freud to write the Seduction Theory. The theory goes as the children just want to please their parents and make them feel good. Children at that age are not capable of understanding their parents are capable of doing wrong or hurting them, so sexually gratifying their parents meant little to them. But as they got older they realized the power dynamic involved and were facing PTSD from this Betrayal Trauma. Freud walked his theory back and put out the Oedipus Complex when his license was threatened.
Schizoanalysis rejects this reductionism, asserting that desire and consciousness are not private internal chambers, but social, political, and material factories connected directly to the world outside. When a person breaks down or experiences non-normative states of consciousness, standard psychiatry uses diagnostic labels to enforce compliance, lock down non-conforming perception, and preserve institutional order. A brain undergoing an intense physical reality such as 'hallucinations', 'psychosis', 'mania', 'suicidal ideation', or 'obsession' does not need to be told that they are not experiencing what they are experiencing or to have that experience taken from them. Forced medication and compliance to societal norms drives the rates of suicide for these folx because they lose the very reality they were operating within. Its like giving an ant consciousness for 5 seconds and then it has to go back to being an ant. The allegory of the cave. I can go on.
This framework points at Freud's early Seduction Theory and its subsequent abandonment, illustrating how clinical bodies of authority have historically covered up real, material abuse and systemic violence by pushing providers into recasting the impact of material reality as internal fantasy and hysteria. Schizoanalysis strips psychiatry of its claims to epistemic authority. Diagnostic manuals function as mechanisms of social policing designed to manage populations and protect power. This critique connects directly to Anti-Racist Theory, which demonstrates how state and medical institutions criminalize survival strategies and label rational anger in Black bodies as pathology. By refusing to locate madness or distress inside the individual, Schizoanalysis aligns with Narrative Therapy, which externalizes power and rejects bad authority, and the Social Model of Disability, which places the burden of harm squarely on unaccommodating social structures.
By grounding itself in situated embodiedness, Schizoanalysis celebrates neurodivergent, intense, and non-linear ways of perceiving reality, directly supporting the physical framework of Intense World Theory. It refuses to cure people into quiet compliance with a sick society. Instead, it views the fragmented, non-conforming mind not as a broken machine, but as an active site of resistance that escapes the rigid categorization of capitalist society, echoing the radical deconstruction of normative control found in Queer Theory. seek to liberate desire from institutional control, restoring individual and collective authority over perception, body-minds, and liberation.
