Emotional overwhelm and nervous system overload are often not the first words someone has to describe their experience. Or the words others use. I hear about things like wanting to be angry but not being able to, only having a few main emotions, body discomfort, Pain, not being able to take action but wanting to, or being described by others as always upset and angry. This overlaps a lot with ADHD, Mood Disorders, Autism, and OCD & Compulsive Experiences.
The body has an experience, but that experience is not able to be accessed. The body acts without conscious thought. This looks like so many things. I don't have to fix this experience or change it. You can feel intensely suicidal and nothing has to change about that. I work with intense experiences like Domestic Violence, Suicide Prevention & Intervention, Suicide Postvention, Sexual Violence, Dissociation, Anger, Tourettic OCD, Disability; the list goes on. Nothing has to change. It does not have to be okay. And it does not have to be easy. The body can hit the point it flips the off switch on emotional experience and that's where we start. Your body can want to leave the world and that's where we start. The body can have a reaction that you don't want or enjoy and that's where we start. You can have a horrid, not fun experience and nothing has to change.
